Orpington is a lively town with a wide selection of shops, a large leisure centre, a beautiful park and many more great facilities.
Shopping in Orpington is great, shops are mainly on the High Street and in the Walnuts Shopping Centre. There is a large Tesco supermarket at the end of the high street. While you visit Tesco for your weekly shop, you can take a trip down the high street to see what is on offer from all the smaller shops and boutiques.
The Walnuts Shopping Centre has an entrance on the high street and is home to many stores. A general market is located next to the Shopping Centre three days a week. There are larger retail outlets in the industrial estate on Cray Avenue and on Sevenoaks Way in St Mary Cray, including the Nugent Shopping Park.
The shops here are generally larger stores including Allied Carpets, Sports Direct, Screwfix and Mothercare. There is also some great shopping to be found in the smaller, local high streets around the Orpington area.
The Walnuts Leisure Centreis next to the Walnuts Shopping Centre and is home to a 6 lane swimming pool and facilities for squash, badminton, basketball, trampolining as well as a gym, steam room and sauna. There is also a range of fitness classes on offer. The pool is for public use but is also home to Orpington Ojays Swimming Club, which competes at county, district and national level.
There is a large college in Orpington that has been offering courses for over 30 years. Over that time they have seen thousands of ambitious, keen students through their courses and on to achieve their goals. They offer courses from GCSE or basic skills through to degree level study. Students come from miles around and close by. They train business people and workforces as well as school leavers, professionals and adults returning to study.
There are rugby, football and cricket pitches in Goddington Park – Orpington Cricket Club and Orpington Football Club are both based here. There are also running clubs, bowls clubs, tennis clubs and much more.
Orpington is popular with commuters because of its excellent transport links.
The Princess Royal University Hospital at Farnborough (formerly Farnborough Hospital) has an Accident and Emergency Department and specialised units as well as being a training hospital. It has been designed with great care. Sweeping lines and natural colours help the exterior blend into its surroundings. Inpatient wards have views of surrounding common-land or the courtyard while clinical areas occupy the centre of the building. The environment and in particular natural light and sensitive use of colour schemes has been carefully considered as this is important to the recovery of patients.
Orpington is also well known for the picturesque Priory Gardens, with a large, established library, church, play area and rose garden as well as the Priory itself – linked to King Cnut. Inside the Priory is the Bromley Museum. The Park is a beautiful oasis just minutes from the busy town centre. The source of the river Cray can be found here.
Orpington really is a diverse area with so much to offer. Great eating, lovely pubs, great shopping and so much more. Look around the site to discover more.
